A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Argentina, 200 km south of Puerto Williams, Chile, triggering a tsunami warning. The quake occurred at 9 a.m. local time and was followed by four minor aftershocks.
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported potential tsunami waves up to 9 feet in Chile and 3 feet in Antarctica. Chile’s Magallanes Region, the southernmost part of the country, was advised to evacuate, with civilians seen leaving the area. Video footage from Punta Arenas showed cars and people evacuating the city.
While the Falkland Islands are considered safe, Chile’s authorities continue to assess the situation and urge citizens to follow evacuation orders. President Gabriel Boric called for the evacuation of the coastline, and emergency teams are responding. Chile is prone to strong earthquakes due to its location between the South American and Nazca tectonic plates.
