A Look at Systems and Policies

Migration Declines at U.S.-Mexico Border Amid Stricter Policies

Migration at the U.S.-Mexico border has dropped in 2025 following stricter enforcement and updated security measures. A major change was the reinstatement of the “Remain in Mexico” policy, requiring asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their cases are processed in the U.S. This, along with faster processing and more returns to home countries, has led many migrants to reconsider their journey.

Authorities continue to use health-based policies like Title 42, and increased border enforcement discourages unauthorized crossings. Some migrants cite safety concerns and long asylum delays as reasons for turning back.

U.S.-Mexico cooperation has also played a key role. In 2025, Mexico deployed troops to its southern border, helping reduce migrant flows before reaching the U.S. Analysts say this coordination sends a strong message about increased border control and uncertainty for migrants.

While effective in reducing crossings, the new policies have sparked debate over their human impact. Many in transit now face disruption and difficult choices, as migration becomes more tightly managed through joint efforts.
