My Teenage Daughter Went to Her Friend’s for a Sleepover— I Felt Like I Should Involve the Police

My 13-year-old daughter, Rosa, called me late at night during a sleepover, shaken because she noticed two “security cameras” in her friend’s room. The friend’s dad claimed they were off, but the indicator lights were glowing. Rosa covered them with towels, and minutes later, the father came in, removed the towels, and calmly asked her not to do it again. Feeling uneasy, Rosa called me to pick her up.

I later spoke to the dad, who explained the cameras had been there for years for security since the room is above the garage. He apologized and clarified they were aimed outside, not at the room. While I believe his explanation, Rosa is adamant about never attending another sleepover and feels unsafe.

I’m proud of her for recognizing her discomfort and acting on it but don’t want this to leave her traumatized. How should I proceed?

Sincerely,
Rosa’s Mom
