Republican Plans To Have Willis Removed Shut Down

The Georgia Supreme Court has put a new commission on hold that was designed to investigate and potentially remove state prosecutors, citing concerns over its authority to regulate district attorneys.

After the prosecution of 18 individuals, including former President Donald Trump, some Georgia Republicans pushed for the commission to target Fulton County DA Fani Willis. However, the court expressed “grave doubts” about its ability to oversee the non-judicial actions of prosecutors. Lawmakers may bypass the court’s rule approval and allow the commission to move forward.

Four district attorneys sued to block the commission, arguing it violates their constitutional rights, but a judge indicated their case is unlikely to succeed. Prosecutors worry the law threatens their discretion, while supporters argue it ensures accountability.

The commission has stated it will not begin operations until rules are finalized and will not investigate cases that occurred before their approval. Willis faces complaints seeking disciplinary action, but the impact of the court’s decision on these remains unclear.
