Midnight Oil’s Founding Drummer Passes Away at 70

The founding drummer and rhythmic foundation of Australia’s legendary rock band Midnight Oil has passed away at the age of 70 after a long struggle with pancreatic cancer. The band confirmed the news through a heartfelt social media message, sharing their grief while celebrating decades of shared music and friendship. Midnight Oil rose to international recognition with their powerful blend of rock and socially conscious storytelling, selling more than 20 million albums worldwide. Their breakthrough record, Diesel and Dust, released in 1987, cemented their global reputation and introduced songs that would become anthems for generations. Behind every performance stood a drummer whose steady pulse and musical instinct shaped the band’s unmistakable sound.

Formed in Sydney in 1972, Midnight Oil quickly became known for music that carried meaning beyond entertainment. Over the years, the band earned multiple ARIA Awards and was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, a testament to their influence on Australian culture. While the drummer was widely respected for his technical skill and energy on stage, his contribution went far beyond percussion. He co-wrote many of the band’s most recognized songs, including “Beds Are Burning,” “Blue Sky Mine,” and “The Dead Heart,” helping craft lyrics and melodies that addressed social justice, environmental awareness, and national identity. His creativity and commitment were central to the band’s artistic direction for more than four decades.

After a hiatus in the early 2000s, Midnight Oil reunited in 2016 to produce new material and reconnect with audiences worldwide. Their final studio album, Resist, arrived in 2022, followed by a farewell tour that marked the close of an extraordinary era. Alongside band work, the drummer also pursued personal projects, including a solo career and a collaborative album with his daughter, created after they reconnected later in life. Their music together reflected warmth, discovery, and shared creativity. In late 2025, he released a final solo EP and spoke in interviews about how songwriting remained a constant companion, describing music as something that never truly leaves a creator.

Tributes from fans, fellow musicians, and loved ones have since highlighted a life devoted to artistic honesty and purpose-driven expression. The band shared that words felt small compared to the loss, but the songs would always remain. His daughter expressed gratitude for the bond they built through music, while supporters around the world revisited the tracks that shaped their own memories. His legacy lives on in recordings that continue to inspire reflection and unity, in rhythms that still echo across stages and speakers, and in a body of work that proved music can challenge, heal, and connect.Rob Hirst
