Doctor Explains What It Means If You Have Ridges On Your Fingernails

A top UK dermatologist, Dr. Ross Perry of Cosmedics, has revealed what the ridges on your nails could be telling you about your health. While often harmless, these subtle lines can sometimes signal underlying issues like nutritional deficiencies, dehydration, or even chronic illness.

“A lack of Vitamin A, protein, or calcium may lead to nail ridges,” Dr. Perry explains. “In more severe cases, iron deficiency or kidney disease could be the cause.”

However, most nail changes are not a cause for alarm. The NHS confirms that issues like brittle, loose, or discolored nails are typically linked to aging or minor lifestyle habits, such as picking or overexposure to water.

Dr. Perry warns that deep, pronounced ridges—especially if accompanied by other symptoms—should prompt a doctor’s visit, as they may indicate kidney disease or diabetes.

Experts also advise seeking help if your nails become misshapen, fall off, or the surrounding skin turns red or swollen, which could point to infection.

Ultimately, regular nail care and early medical advice can help prevent small signs from becoming serious concerns.
