NFL legend dies aged 41 – just weeks after announcing devastating diagnosis

The NFL is mourning the sudden passing of New York Jets legend Nick Mangold, who died on October 26 at just 41 years old, only two weeks after revealing his battle with chronic kidney disease. The news has left both the Jets and Ohio State Buckeyes communities heartbroken.

Mangold, one of the most respected centers in the league, anchored the Jets’ offensive line for over a decade. Known for his strength, leadership, and loyalty, he was a cornerstone of the team’s identity during his 11-year career.

Earlier this month, Mangold shared a deeply personal message about his declining health. “In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease,” he wrote. “After a rough summer, I’m undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have had more time.”

In his emotional plea, Mangold revealed that no family members were eligible donors, prompting him to reach out to his broader football family. “I am in need of a kidney donor with type O blood,” he shared, expressing faith that help would come from the community that had always supported him.

Despite his condition, Mangold’s words were filled with gratitude and optimism. “I’m thankful for my family, who have been my rock. This has reminded me how lucky I am to have such amazing people behind me.”

Tributes poured in from across the football world, including Jets owner Woody Johnson, who called Mangold “a leader, a warrior, and a friend whose impact went far beyond the field.”

Born in Ohio, Mangold rose from a high school standout to an Ohio State Buckeyes star before being drafted by the Jets in 2006.

Today, teammates, fans, and friends remember Nick Mangold not just as a Jets legend, but as a man of integrity, humor, and unwavering courage.
