Tim Conway made us laugh so hard it hurt

Tim Conway spent decades turning simple sketches into comedic masterpieces, earning a place in television history with a brand of humor that was equal parts impeccable timing, boundless imagination, and pure joy. Long before he became a household name on The Carol Burnett Show, Conway sharpened his wit in regional theater and early television, honing an ability to improvise that would soon leave audiences—and fellow actors—howling with laughter. On Carol Burnett’s variety series, he perfected the art of “stealing” a scene without ever upstaging his co-stars, often by undermining the straight man—most famously Harvey Korman—until Korman was helplessly doubled over in giggles. Burnett herself insisted that Conway’s secret mission was “to destroy Harvey Korman,” and in their legendary “Dentist” sketch, where Conway’s hapless practitioner injects himself with Novocaine and delivers deadpan punchlines between frantic fumbles, even veteran comedians couldn’t keep a straight face.

Yet Conway’s genius went far beyond physical gags. His Oldest Man character shuffled across the stage at a snail’s pace, pausing mid-line to let the suspense—and the laughter—build, while his Mr. Tudball persona brought a petulant schoolmaster to life with a perfectly timed exasperation that only Conway could sustain. Dick Van Dyke called him “a comedic genius” whose presence on set was “pure fun,” and Conway never denied that his success was born of collaboration: he credited The Carol Burnett Show‘s ensemble atmosphere for giving him the freedom to experiment, fail spectacularly, and then try again until a simple idea became a moment of pure hilarity.

Off-camera, Conway was known for his humility and generosity—always the first to deflect credit and the last to seek attention. In interviews, he would downplay his own contribution, emphasizing instead the writers, the crew, and the audiences who cheered every punchline. Reflecting on his legacy after his passing in 2019, Burnett summed up his impact perfectly: “We were so fortunate to have Tim on our show,” she said, remembering both “the agony and the ecstasy of trying not to crack up when he was on the loose.” Today, generations of fans and fellow comedians alike salute Tim Conway not just for the tears of laughter he inspired, but for a career defined by kindness, creativity, and the simple truth that great comedy comes from a playful heart—and a willingness to risk embarrassment in the name of a good joke.
