I arrived at the hospital to bring home my wife Suzie and our newborn twins, only to find she was gone, leaving behind a cryptic note: “Ask your mother WHY she did this to me.” Confused and heartbroken, I learned that Suzie had checked out earlier, appearing fine but quiet. At home, I confronted my mother, accusing her of driving Suzie away, but she denied it. That night, I found a letter my mom had written to Suzie, telling her to leave me. It became clear that my mom’s constant criticism had pushed Suzie to her breaking point.
Over the following months, I raised the twins alone, searching for Suzie. A friend revealed that Suzie felt trapped by my mother’s cruelty and her own postpartum depression. A year later, on the twins’ first birthday, Suzie returned, explaining that she had left to protect the babies and escape her feelings of inadequacy. With therapy, she began to heal, and together, we slowly rebuilt our family.
